Gucci Mane's Management Accused Of Federal Fraud

11.30.09 | by Salima Koroma

Ozone Magazine published an article on Monday citing several club promoters who claim that Gucci Mane's management cheated them out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The management team, which consists of booking agents Johnnie Cabbell and Debra Antney, is being accused of signing bad contracts.

“Johnnie [Cabbell] is the grand vampire,” claimed Chicago promoter Godfather, who has been promoting concerts for over two decades and estimates that he lost almost $100,000 working with Gucci's “I don’t work with Johnnie anymore," he said. “He sucks the blood out of you.”In July 2009, Gucci Mane headlined the 'So Icey' tour along with OJ da Juiceman and Nicki Minaj. However, all three of the artists failed to show up for the first scheduled shows in Florida, according to Ozone, leaving promoters to suffer losses of over $140,000. Out of the twelve shows that were scheduled, Ozone claims that six or more shows never happened, enraging promoters who clamored for refunds but were denied. In mid-July, Gucci Man violated his probation and went to jail during the 'So Icey' tour. Promoters claim that Gucci's managers signed contracts for shows (through booking agency Ujaama Entertainment), knowing the rapper wouldn't be able to show up and perform. However, because of convoluted contractual language involving more than one party (promoters, managers, artists, and record labels), promoters are finding it hard to get their money back.“I’m not sure if it’s on purpose,” said attorney Paul W. Gardner who will be representing one promoter, “but [the way the contracts are written up] are very nasty and sinister. It’s multi-layered. From a legal standpoint, when someone does something wrong to you, you can sue that person. Person A sues Person B; laymen understand that [concept]. But the problem arises when a middleman is included and the person on the backend does the harm. Person A has to sue Person B to get to Person C, but in this situation, Person B’s contract says ‘You can’t sue me.’ With the [So Icey Tour] contracts, Person A is the promoter. Person B is Ujaama, Person C is Johnnie, Person D is [Debra], and E is the artist…Because of the difficulty of the third-party situation, I have to prove which party has the money…Or maybe it’s all of them.”It is not clear how much Gucci Man receives from these deals, although promoters revealed that artists receive little to nothing of advanced deposits. The money, they claim, goes straight into the pockets of managers. Cabbell and Antney could face charges of federal fraud if taken to court. managers.

Nas & Damian Marley Join National Geographic For Special Event

Throughout 2009, Nas and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley have been tucked away in famed Los Angeles studios, recording their self-titled Distant Relatives album. Flowing along with the album's potent union of Hip Hop and Reggae music and culture, the duo has joined National Geographic for a Distant Relatives event. On December 12, Nas and Damian Marley will come together at National Geographic's Grosvenor Auditorium in Washington DC to lead a discussion on the cultural links between the early days of Hip Hop and its Caribbean and African origins. The discussion will travel the journey from Africa through the slave trade to the American and Caribbean colonies, spawning both the dancehall parties of Jamaica and the park jams of The Bronx. Key figures of this discussion will be present. Moderated by Sway Calloway, the Distant Relatives event will include DJ Kool Herc, Rakim, Daddy U-Roy, King Jammy, Jeff Chang and Moussa Lo and DJ Red Alert - in addition to Nas and Marley. This event is significant because it features the often reclusive "Godfather" of Hip Hop: Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc, who brought about the music elements of the culture to The Bronx as early as 1973. Kool Herc is paired with legendary Jamaican deejay Daddy U-Roy a rarely-credited Rap pioneer for his 1969 hit "Wake The Town," recorded in the country the same year Herc moved to the States. Also speaking together for one of the first times in history classic Rap innovators DJ Red Alert and Rakim will share the stage, as both have incoporated elements of African and Reggae music to their careers. Red Alert and Rakim will be joined by Hip Hop author and scholar Jeff Chang. The panel is coordinated by Reggae deejay and VIBE magazine founding editor Rob Kenner, presently authoring a book on the links between Reggae and Hip Hop.The event will be taped to be included in the expected 2010 Distant Relatives documentary film, due around the release of the highly-anticipated album. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online and at www.nglive.org and via telephone at (202) 857-7700, or in person at the National Geographic ticket office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Tickets purchased online can be picked up in the lobby prior to the event. The event is sponsored by VTech. The event will also be streamed live at www.natgeomusic.net. An official after party at neighboring nightclub Zanzibar will feature an open microphone, and early reports claim the nightcap not to be missed. Said event is free to event ticketholders.

Rappers React To Lil Wayne's Prison Sentence
October 23rd, 2009

In response to Lil Wayne's one-year prison sentence, several rappers took to Twitter, determined to offer their opinions.Jim Jones drew a comparison to rapper T.I.'s prison sentence. "Thts crazy lil Wayne gets a year for a hand pistol and ti gets the same tome for having army issued rifles wit silencers U tell me wtf."Juelz Santana also offered his thoughts on the matter. "A! I just arrived 2 the set. Just did a MTV News interview wit Shaheem about Lil Wayne. That's some BULL SHIT!!!!," wrote Santana, a frequent collaborator of Wayne's.Finally, Miami rapper Rick Ross also weighed in, but provided a positive outlook on the subject. "It hurt us," said Rick Ross to MTV News. "We strategize and work towards this for so long, [and] when something like that, a major inconvenience such as that, nine people out of 10, that stint could hurt them. But I think Wayne has a unique situation with his Cash Money family and now his Young Money roster, I know they got a lot of things poppin'. Wayne's got enough music. He's one of the few artists I feel could eat those 10 months up, or that year, and then come home to rap royalty. If anybody is gonna be able to do it, it's gonna be Wayne."

Lady Gaga

Billboard announced pop sensation Lady Gaga will be named its "Rising Star" at the 2009 Billboard Women In Music event, taking place on Oct. 2nd in New York City. The Billboard Rising Star Award rewards artists that have achieved a level of success and proven to have vast potential in the early stages of their career. Lady Gaga is the undisputed break-out star of the year for many reasons, including the success of her debut album, "The Fame" (Streamline Records), which has spawned four Billboard Hot 100 hit singles like "Just Dance" and "Poker Face," both which reached No. 1 on the tally. "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" are also the Nos. 2 and 8 best-selling digital songs of all time, with 4.6 million and 4 million downloads, respectively. Gaga recently became the third artist in the history of the Mainstream Top 40 Airplay chart to have three No. 1 singles from a debut album. "The Fame" is also the best-selling album from a debut artist for 2009, with 1,441,000 copies sold in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In addition to writing all the tracks on her album, Lady Gaga has previously written for Britney Spears, the Pussycat Dolls, and New Kids on the Block. "Lady Gaga is one of those rare examples of a truly unique artist with mass appeal," says Bill Werde, Editorial Director of Billboard. "She has established herself as one of today's top songwriters, and the whole world is waiting to see what her next outrageous but brilliant move or style will be. It is that ongoing anticipation, combined with her success that makes her a rising star." The Billboard Women in Music Event celebrates the most powerful and talented women in the music business, and is held in conjunction with the much-anticipated publication of Billboard's Women In Music Power Players List - recognizing the top female music executives who are leading the industry with their artistic and business vision. Billboard will also honor Grammy Award-winning artist and pop culture icon Beyoncé with the coveted Billboard Woman of The Year Award at the event.

ay-Z remains in the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, with his new album "The Blueprint 3" shifting 298,000 copies (down 37%) in its second week. The set bowed atop the list last week with 476,000.Traditionally, No. 1-debuting albums that start with monster sales weeks have a steeper second-week decline. Jay-Z's drop, however, was fairly soft, in part because last week was the album's first proper week of availability. Though "The Blueprint 3" had its Sept. 11 release pushed up to Sept. 8, many retailers reportedly didn't have the album until later that week. Jay-Z also performed on the premiere of NBC's "Jay Leno Show," and the residual buzz from his MTV Video Music Awards performance likely bled into sales. At No. 2 on the Billboard 200, Whitney Houston's "I Look To You" climbs one spot with 156,000 -- up 77%. The album makes the great sales gain this week thanks to Houston's much-publicized two-day stand on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." In three weeks, "I Look to You" has sold 548,000 copies.Following Houston is the first of five debuts in the top 10: Muse's "The Resistance" at No. 3 with 128,000 copies -- a career-high for the act. That figure more than doubles the band's previous best week, when 2006's "Black Holes and Revelations" debuted and peaked at No. 9 with 48,000.Kid Cudi is up next with his debut effort, "Man on the Moon: The End of Day," which starts at No. 4 with 104,000 sold. The album is powered by two top 50 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: "Day 'N' Nite' (No. 3) and "Make Her Say" (No. 43).Drake's seven-song EP, "So Far Gone," gives the rapper his first taste of the Billboard 200, starting at No. 6 with 73,000. His proper full-length debut should surface in early 2010.Rapper Lil Boosie nets his first top 10 set with "Superbad" starting at No. 7 with 49,000, while rock band Megadeth scores its fifth top 10 set with "Endgame," entering at No. 9 with 45,000.As for the non-debuts in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, Miley Cyrus' "The Time Of Our Lives" EP falls three rungs to No. 5 with 75,000 (down 38%), Taylor Swift's "Fearless" moves up two slots to No. 8 with 46,000 (up 37%) and the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." slips three places to No. 10 with 40,000 (down 8%). Swift's big gain was likely the result of both her performance on the MTV Video Music Awards and the endless buzz surrounding Kanye West's hijacking of her Best Female Video acceptance speech.Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Sept. 20) totaled 6.42 million units, down 4% compared to the sum last week (6.71 million) and down 7% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (6.92 million). Year to date album sales stand at 250.6 million, down 14% compared to the same total at this point last year (291.4 million).

Baton Rouge CBS affiliate WAFB reports that Torrence Hatch, better known as Lil Boosie, was sentenced to two years in prison Tuesday afternoon after pleading guilty to drug and gun charges. In addition to numerous local community outreach efforts to help his community, Boosie had numerous run ins with local law enforcement, including an April assault charge and an arrest in October of 2008 which led to Tuesday's sentencing."I'm just ready to get all of this behind me and get further on with my career," Hatch told WAFB reporters. "I pled guilty to my best interest."Boosie's latest effort, Superbad: The Return of Boosie Bad Azz, was released on September 15. The album's standout single, "Better Believe It," which features Young Jeezy and Webbie has been on the Billboard singles chart for eight weeks, peaking at the number 50 spot. The rapper says he plans to spend as much time with his children as possible before serving his sentence. His prison term could be considerably shortened if he qualifies for early release due to good behavior.

Noel Gallagher Quits Oasis

Lead guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher has quit Oasis, according to a statement he posted tonight (Aug. 28) to the band's website. The announcement came shortly after the last-minute cancellation of the group's scheduled performance today at the Rock En Seine festival in Paris."It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight," Gallagher wrote. "People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."Noel's brother and Oasis lead singer/guitarist Liam Gallagher founded the band in 1991 with Paul Arthurs, Paul McGuigan and Tony McCaroll. Noel joined shortly thereafter and took over as Oasis' lead songwriter. The Gallagher brothers are the longest-standing members of the band; the rest of the current lineup includes guitarist/keyboardist Colin Archer, bassist Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock.Oasis had performances scheduled at the Rock Am See Festival in Konstanz, Germany tomorrow, and the I-Day Festival in Milan, Italy on Sunday, both of which are canceled, according to Gallagher's statement. "Apologies to all the people who bought tickets for the shows in Paris, Konstanz and Milan," he wrote. No further news on the band's future have been announced.Oasis' most recent album, "Dig Out Your Soul," peaked at 5 on the Billboard 200 last October.
